IRS notices while you live overseas

The IRS mails notices to the last address it has for you, often an old US address. Ask whoever gets your US mail to scan every page and note the date on the letter, since response dates run from that date. You can update your address with IRS Form 8822, and many notices can be viewed in your IRS Online Account. Got one? Start with the $249 Notice Review.

Behind on US filings?

Living abroad doesn't end US filing. If you live outside the US on the regular due date, the IRS gives an automatic 2-month extension to June 15 to file (attach a statement explaining why you qualify), but interest runs on unpaid tax from April 15. See unfiled tax returns or our Thailand page.

FBAR (foreign bank account reports)

If your foreign accounts totaled more than $10,000 at any point in the year, you may need to file an FBAR. Read our FBAR guide.

Streamlined filing

The IRS Streamlined Procedures may let some non-willful filers catch up. Whether you qualify depends on your facts. Read about Streamlined filing.

Passport and tax debt

Seriously delinquent tax debt can affect a US passport. Learn what that means.

Time zones

Thailand is 11 hours ahead of US Eastern time during US daylight time and 12 hours ahead in winter. Most of the work happens by secure portal and email, and calls are scheduled for your morning or evening.
